At Stable Rest and Rehab, we do the work for you.  When it comes to rehabilitating a horse from a tendon injury, the work that needs to be put in can be overwhelming. Daily hand walking alone can be a big challenge if you can only spend a few days a week at the yard. Having your horse on full stable rest can be a huge management challenge when the facilities don't allow for it.

Arranging regular veterinary check-ups, physiotherapy sessions, alternative treatment options, as well as coordinating the team that you have managing your horse from day to day can be time-consuming, confusing, and filled with doubt.

That’s why, at Stable Rest and Rehabilitation, we do it all for you.

Full Boarding:

We provide boarding in a calm, low-stress environment. With a maximum of 3 boarding patients, each patient will receive the care and attention they require daily. Spacious stables overlook our free-roaming herd, and each has an individual paddock perfect for moving around while limiting the risk of injury. This social, tranquil environment allows a stress-free space to rest, recover, and heal.

Rehabilitation:

Each horse will have individual rehabilitation requirements, which will need to be adjusted and progressed over time. We believe in the power of keeping it simple -in the case of tendon injuries, the basic tools and modalities available to us are also the most effective. Some of the modalities we make regular use of are listed below. We will also work with your veterinarian or other members of the healthcare team to provide your horse with the treatment options they need.

Hydrotherapy:

During the initial inflammatory phase after injury, hydrotherapy providing both ICE, compression and a salinized environment can be hugely beneficial to reduce pain, swelling and inflammation in the tendon.

Compression and support:

Providing compression and support to the affected and the unaffected limbs during the initial phases of healing can be a valuable mechanism of protection and reducing pain in the limb.

Laser therapy:

Laser therapy can be a valuable modality to improve healing, vascularization, and cellular function within the tendon throughout the healing process.

PEMF:

Pulsed electromagnetic field therapy provides daily cellular support, stimulates regeneration, reduces pain and improves healing in the tendon.

Kinesiology tape:

Kinesiology tape can play a role in reducing pain, improving limb use, stimulating areas of disuse, supporting strained structures, and facilitating correct movement. Kinesiology tape is used not only on the tendons but also on any areas of the body that require additional support or neurological feedback.

Proprioceptive facilitation:

Facilitating and retraining the proprioceptive system is essential for the horse to regain function and prevent future injury. Through static and active therapeutic exercises, we focus on retraining this neurological system back to optimal function.

Therapeutic exercise:

Arguably the most important aspect of your horse’s rehabilitation, this is where we shine. Retraining posture, functional mobility, and muscle recruitment patterns of the whole horse not only allows progressive loading and adaptation of the affected tendon but also allows for improved movement and a reduced risk of injury in the horse that graduates from their rehabilitation program.
